Please plan ahead for extra traffic, and plan to drop your dancer off and return to pick them up. If you are stopped by a parking attendant or police officer, let them know that you are headed to Tanner Dance.

We need to reserve our limited Tanner Dance parking spaces for those in the Parent Tot and Dancers with Disabilities classes. If you are in one of these classes and the Tanner lot is full, you may park long the edge of the west circle. Please pull all the way to the end of the circle.

Please remember that ADA stalls are only for patrons with the appropriate parking pass.

Thank you!

Message from Miss Joni

Dear Tanner Dance Parents and dancers,

Thank you for dancing with us. We appreciate you and value each and every one of our dancers and families. This is never more important than it is now as we navigate the changing situation of our community’s health. We are committed to keeping our doors open and our dancers dancing, and with that we ask that you consider masking as you enter our building.

It is always such a pleasure and honor to see each child grow, develop technically, and shine in their own way; whether you are enrolled in a Parent Tot class, an advanced studio class, a ballet or hip-hop class, or a visual art class, your participation in our studio brings depth and community to all of us.

We are looking forward to another dynamic dancing year and we want to keep you updated with all of the latest information. If you are not receiving our Tanner Studio eNEWS, please call our office to update your email and contact information.

We have an exciting and expansive offering of dance classes for the upcoming year. Please visit our website at tannerdance.utah.edu for the latest information on class schedules. Tanner Dance offers creative dance classes at locations across the Wasatch Front including the University of Utah as well as satellite locations, Brigham City, Bountiful, South Jordan, Ogden and Heber. Continuing this fall are our specialized classes for Dancers with Disabilities, All Boys class, Arts for the Young classes, adult dance, ballet classes, and, a perpetual favorite, Hip Hop/Jazz. We will feature our studio classes, ages Kindergarten through Adult, in our annual Kingsbury Hall Spring Studio Show on Friday, May 13th and Saturday, May14th 2022.

Our faculty are dedicated to Miss Virginia’s founding philosophy that we are here to “develop excellent dancers and, more importantly develop young people who are useful imaginative, worthwhile human beings.” Prominent in our focus is having children engaged in the creative process, dancing expressively, and learning the craft and technique of dance. Our wholesome approach to dance education truly honors each child’s creative spirit and dancing heart. We here at the Tanner Dance Studio have a community of parents and dancers that are dedicated to the Tanner principles and observing life’s beauty through their own “magic eye”.

As faculty, we are invested in each dancer and are open to speaking with you whenever a concern or need develops. You may reach your teacher through the main office at 801-581-7374 or through me directly at 801-587-3654.

We hope you are pleased with your experience here in the Virginia Tanner Dance Program and we look forward to many years of growing and dancing together.

Sincerely,

Miss Joni Urry Wilson

Tanner Dance Studio Director

Health + Safety Reminders

Tanner Dance faculty and staff are following CDC guidelines and continuing to wear masks inside the studio. We strongly encourage all of our dancers and parents to wear masks as well.

Parents: please remind your dancer to bring a mask with them to class. We only have a limited supply on hand in the office.

Please plan to drop your dancer off rather than waiting inside the building. We are still trying to minimize traffic in our lobby areas.

Remember to drop off in the west circle and pick up in the east driveway. Please remind your dancer to stay on the sidewalk until you pull up rather than running out into the road.

If your dancer or anyone in your household, is feeling sick, please keep your dancer home. Please notify the Tanner Dance office right away if your dancer tests positive for COVID; our staff will need to know the last date your child was in class, and the date that they started experiencing any symptoms. Please email this information to tannerdance@utah.edu

Thank you!

Fall Session General Info

We are so excited to begin a new year of dance with you! Our fall session began this week. Please read through the following information carefully so that your dancer is ready for a wonderful year of dance.

COVID PROTOCOLS

Masks: University of Utah programs are not allowed to mandate masks. However, not everyone in our community is vaccine eligible, including youth and people with certain health conditions. Wearing face coverings continues to offer health benefits. The staff and faculty will continue to be masked for the fall session, and we strongly encourage our dancers and parents to please do the same.

Drop Off/Pick Up:

  • All dancers should be dropped off in the west circle, and picked up on the east side (see detailed instructions below).
  • Temperature checks are no longer required.
  • As we begin the fall session, and until we have more information about vaccines for our young population, we would like to continue to minimize large casual gatherings in the lobby. Please plan to drop your dancer off, rather than waiting inside. If you have a very young dancer, you may accompany them inside and to their teacher, but please arrange to wait elsewhere until the end of your child’s class.

Hand Sanitizing:

  • Everyone who enters the Tanner Dance building will be asked to sanitize their hands, and dancers will be reminded to sanitize as they exit after class.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be located on the east and west sides of the building and outside each of the studios.

Healthy Dancers:

  • Dancers should only attend class if they are healthy. Please keep your dancer home if they, or anyone in your household, are feeling sick.
  • Teachers will verbally check for COVID symptoms at the beginning of each class.

Cleaning Procedures:

  • All studios will be frequently disinfected including door handles, railings, bathrooms, benches, and ballet barres. Floors will be sanitized each night.

Class Times:

  • Classes will return to their regular time slots. There will no longer be a 15 minute break between classes.

All of the above information is subject to change should the public health situation change.

BIO RELEASE FORMS

The University of Utah requires that we have a Bio/Release form on file for all of our students. When you registered for class you should have been sent an electronic version of our Bio/Release form via DocuSign from a member of our office staff.

If you have not completed this form, please do so before classes begin. If you’d rather fill out a paper version, please click here for a PDF of the Bio/Release form, and bring it with you your first day of class.

WHAT TO WEAR – CREATIVE DANCE CLASSES

  • Dancers need to wear clothing that allows the teacher to properly see alignment in order to prevent injuries and incorrect habits. Typically, attire for girls is a leotard and leggings or dance pants, and attire for boys is a close-fitting t-shirt with dance pants or athletic shorts. If you have a non-binary or gender fluid dancer, please have them choose the attire with which they feel the most comfortable. Dancers should be able to move freely without restriction.
  • Please no bare midriffs.
  • All hair should be pulled back and secured.
  • We will be dancing in bare feet. Please arrive to class with clean feet.

WHAT TO WEAR – BALLET CLASSES

Each ballet class has an assigned leotard in addition to pink tights and ballet shoes. Please click the button below to see which leotard your dancer needs.

It is very important that everyone attend as there are some exciting changes happening this year including added performance opportunities and a new attendance policy.

CDT High School Master Class

To kick off the new school year, we have planned a special workshop for the CDT high school classes on Saturday, August 21 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Guest artist Brian Gerke will teach a master class from 9:00 – 11:00 AM (see more info about Brian below). After class, you’ll have an opportunity to talk with CDT alumni who are currently working in dance or other creative fields. These alumni will provide advice and ideas about where your CDT experiences can take you next, and what it’s like to pursue dance as a career. Lunch will be provided.

All CDT dancers entering 10th-12th grade are invited to attend. Please RSVP to this workshop by emailing tannerdance@utah.edu.

Sandy + Arts Festival Performances

CDT will be performing Invention at the Sandy Amphitheatre on Tuesday, June 22 at 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM. Class rehearsals will take place the week prior, June 14-18, with a company rehearsal on Monday, June 21. Please save these dates in your calendar. We will be sending a detailed rehearsal schedule soon.

This year, the Utah Arts Festival has been moved to August 28. Due to COVID, the festival is limiting the number of dancers who can be in the space, so we will not be performing Invention at this venue. Instead, we will be creating a new performance that meets the festival’s COVID guidelines. We will update you as soon as we have determined which CDT classes will be performing.

We’d like to invite you to support our other programs at Tanner Dance in their upcoming spring performances.

Inspired by the theme of “elements”, this year’s Tipping Point Showcase is an immersive exploration of the pieces that make up our earth, our society, and ourselves. The members of Tipping Point, Momentum, and In Motion dance companies will present 8 new pieces of student choreography, as well as choreography by guest artists Juan Carlos Claudio, Lauren Curly, Natalie Gotter, Micah Moch, Natosha Washington, and Bashaun Williams.
